Minneapolis Suburbs Push Back as Sheriffs Add Flock Cameras

Suburban leaders trying to keep controversial Flock cameras off their streets are caught in an unusual dilemma, rebuffing county sheriffs’ offices that are mounting more of the license plate readers. Minneapolis suburban leaders are challenging county sheriffs' offices' plans to add more license plate readers to their streets. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office had planned to add three Flock cameras in Vadnais Heights, but the City Council recently halted this work. The Anoka County Sheriff's Office is doing a one-year pilot program to add 73 more license plates across the county next year, while some cities within its borders, including Columbia Heights, Hilltop and Nowthen, are pushing to opt out. The local sheriffs have defended the technology, claiming it is a crucial tool for solving major crimes and missing persons cases. However, several city councils have directed police to turn off or restrict the readers due to concerns over how data is shared and could be misused. The debate is creating tension between cities and counties over where and how to operate the technology across jurisdictions.
