Why does Minnesota have such high voter turnout?
Whether they're red, blue, or somewhere in the middle, Minnesotans are showing their true colors with soaring early voting numbers. Minnesota has seen a surge in early voting numbers, with nearly 420,000 voters casting their ballots in-person or by mail during the first five weeks of early voting. This is a significant increase from four years ago, when about 282,000 had voted early. Over the past five general elections, Minnesota ranked No. 1 in the country three times, with the state finishing second in 2024 and third overall in 2022. Steve Simon, Minnesota's secretary of state, attributes these high turnout to good laws and a pro-voter culture. Unlike other states, voters don't have to register before an election. Early voting has become more accessible in recent years, with Minneapolis opening 12 pop-up locations ahead of the midterms.
