Brooklyn Center, Minn. — Walmart will close its doors at its downtown Brooklyn store next month, city officials announced Tuesday.

The store, located at 1200 Shingle Creek Crossing, will close April 21, citing its poor performance in recent years.

Walmart in downtown Brooklyn employs nearly 250 people. Walmart told city officials it is working to relocate that staff.

Closing is coming soon Aldi closed in North Minneapolis last month and as a record number of Minnesotans need help from food shelves.

Brooklyn Center says Walmart has served more than 34,000 communities since opening in 2012.

“Our residents have come to rely on the convenience of the location,” said City Manager Dr. Reginald Edwards. “This is a devastating and huge economic loss for our region…”

The next closest Walmart is in Brooklyn Park, just over six miles away.

WCCO reached out to Walmart for comment and has not yet heard back.
