Minnesota Star Tribune closes Minneapolis printing plant as staff reflect on the end of an era

MINNEAPOLIS — The smell of ink, paper, oil and metal clung to the air. Shredded newspaper dangled from a milelong stretch of conveyors that shuttled millions of pages every week. The Minnesota Star Tribune has closed its Heritage Center printing plant in Minneapolis, ending decades of work and generations of history. The move comes as the Star Tribune announced plans to sell the North Loop plant, lay off 125 workers and move printing to Des Moines to save money. The company's traditional newspaper will still be printed and delivered seven days a week. The closure of the plant signals the end of an era for production workers who have worked for decades. The Star Tribune CEO Steve Grove stated that the company will continue printing, despite the shrinking print industry. The newspaper has expanded its digital capabilities, including in-person experiences such as outdoors events and an NBA arena.
