Sam Darnold Possesses the Arm Talent to Succeed for the Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Vikings' quarterback Sam Darnold has been extremely impressive this offseason and possesses the talent to succeed in this offense. Sam Darnold, the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback, has been praised for his impressive performance in mandatory minicamp and voluntary organized team activities this year, leading to him being the starting quarterback for the team's first game against the New York Giants. Despite J.J. McCarthy being considered a potential starter, the Vikings have remained patient with Darnard's development. A play from mandatory minicipicipation highlighted Darnell's ability to accurately distribute the ball to wide receiver Trishton Jackson, who was sprinting towards the back pylon when he released the ball perfectly timed and landed it in for a touchdown. Despite this, Dane Mizutani (Pioneer Press) noted that there's “no question” Darnald’s ability to succeed under head coach Kevin O’Connell and is surrounded by a solid offensive core, including excellent tackles and an interior offensive line. The biggest challenge will be how he handles the offense right away against a tough opening schedule.

Sam Darnold Possesses the Arm Talent to Succeed for the Minnesota Vikings
With mandatory minicamp in the books and voluntary organized team activities coming to a close on Thursday (June 13th), it’s quite clear now that Sam Darnold will be your starting quarterback week one against the New York Giants. Although nearly every Minnesota Vikings’ fan wants to see rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy start, the Vikings have preached patience on his development.
Although it’s very likely we won’t be seeing McCarthy take the field with the starters anytime soon, the continued high praise of Darnold is in full effect from the coaching staff and media, and one media member gave us further evidence as to why Darnold is already ahead of the curve showing the team what he can do.
Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Sam Darnold has been extremely impressive this offseason
According to Dane Mizutani (Pioneer Press), there was a particular play from mandatory minicamp that stood out when analyzing Darnold’s ability. It had the perfect amount of touch, timing, and accuracy that is needed from a quarterback on a consistent basis.
In this particular play, Darnold initially releases the ball to wide receiver Trishton Jackson who was still in the middle of the field as he sprinted toward the back pylon. Darnold then feathers the ball perfectly, with the right amount of touch, to Jackson hauling it in for a touchdown.

Mizutani said that this play “showed how quickly Darnold has already picked up parts of the playbook as he attempts to prove the Vikings right for taking a chance on him.” Mizutani also added that there’s “no question” Darnold possesses the arm talent necessary to succeed in this offense.
At this stage, Darnold is comfortably in the driver’s seat to start most, if not all, of the games this year. It will be his job to lose. Darnold’s biggest challenge is how he will be able to handle the offense right away against a very tough opening schedule. Something Ben Goessling (Star Tribune – KFAN) eluded to the other day on KFAN.
Well, my question continues to be, how does the QB do? I mean, whether that’s, and I expect it’s Darnold, how does he handle the offense right away? You go on the road, a place where he’s familiar, obviously, MetLife Stadium, but then you get that stretch of tough opponents as you come back home, starting with the 49ers and the home opener… “I think the, how does Darnold handle it? How does he play in that offense is a question.
Darnold is surrounded by a solid offensive core. He’ll be able to throw the ball Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and eventually T.J. Hockenson, who’s coming off a torn ACL and MCL injury. He’s bookended by excellent tackles in Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill, while also having an interior offensive line that should be improved given the competition for starting positions this offseason.

Darnold has the skills and talent to succeed under head coach Kevin O’Connell. There’s a reason why he was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft. In the end, it will be about how Darnold handles everything and eliminating turnovers that plagued him with his stints in New York and Carolina.
