Minneapolis restaurant that offered free meals to protest ICE raids announces closure

Modern Times Café, a Minneapolis restaurant that attempted to eliminate prices, has announced it will be closing for good by the end of the year. Minneapolis restaurant Modern Times Café, which offered free meals to protest ICE raids, has announced it will close for good by the end of the year. Owner Dylan Alverson stated that he had exhausted all options without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is. The restaurant, which rebranded as Post Modern Times, had been operating as a "free and donation-based restaurant" in protest of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in his state. The decision was made after Alverson's employee, Alex Pretti, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents. Despite initially operating without prices for six months, the restaurant reopened in August and continued serving 25 free meals a day. Alverson suggested that he could use his business as a model for other restaurants and suggested that other struggling independent restaurants could be used as a fundraising mechanism.
