Residents of St. Paul’s West Side fight for cleaner air, safer streets in the industrial Southport neighborhood. Residents of St. Paul’s West Side are fighting for cleaner air, safer streets, and improved road safety in the Southport neighborhood on St.Paul’s west Side. The neighborhood was once home to the West Side Flats, where Minnesota’ early Mexican American community settled. The primary industrial site in the area is a metal recycling scrapyard facility owned by EMR, a British firm that purchased Northern Metals, which has a history of environmental violations at its scrapyard in North Minneapolis. The West Side Community Organization is seeking ideas for improvements to road safety, accommodate pedestrians, and decrease traffic backups. They also plan to study a new access point to the neighborhood, document and cite local industry for emitting excessive dust pollution. The group is pushing for a new dust control ordinance at the St. Paulo City Council, which is currently making its committee and seems to have broad support.
