Green Bay Packers Linked To Former Minnesota Vikings 'Premier' Pass Rusher

The Green Bay Packers could use an extra pass rusher this season. They're linked to a former Minnesota Vikings pass rusher. The Green Bay Packers have linked their free agency options to former Minnesota Vikings 'Premier' Pass Rusher Yannick Ngakoue, who was recently drafted by the Packers, as one of their top potential signing options. The Packers should add extra help on the Edge before the season to help out Preston Smith, and one NFL writer suggested the team could go after a rival’s former player. Floyd signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills this week, and the Packers should be able to sign him without much risk this offseason. Follow us on Twitter at @WiSportsHeroics.

Green Bay Packers Linked To Former Minnesota Vikings 'Premier' Pass Rusher

The Green Bay Packers watched as one of their top potential signing options at Edge, Leonard Floyd, signed with the Buffalo Bills this week. There are still a few pass-rushing options for the Packers to sign in free agency, and one NFL writer suggested the team could go after a rival’s former player.

The Packers drafted Lukas Van Ness to be the pass rusher of the future. However, it will take some time for Van Ness to get his NFL sea legs. Rashan Gary will be coming back from a major injury. The Packers should add extra help on the Edge before the season to help out Preston Smith. A lack of a dominant pass rush proved costly to defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s scheme last season.

Michael Gallagher with YardaBarker recently wrote about the top free agents that are still available. Gallagher thinks Yannick Ngakoue could be a benefit to the Packers’ defense:

“It’s surprising Ngakoue is still available given he’s only 28 and still one of the premier pass-rushers in the league. He led the Colts with 9.5 sacks last season and ranked second on the team in pressures (44) and QB hits (16) and third in hurries (23). Ngakoue has never had fewer than eight sacks or 44 pressures in a season, and he could make sense for a team looking to shore up one side of its pass rush like the Bears, Chiefs, Falcons, Giants, Packers or Titans.”

Ngakoue played for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2020 season. He’s an elite pass rusher who is best suited for passing downs. Ngakoue has one Achilles heel; he struggles to defend the run. The Packers should be able to sign him without much risk this offseason.

Floyd signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. One would think Ngakoue, given his history of playing with a team for a year or less, would only sign for one season in Green Bay. This might be one of the better signings the Packers can make at this point in the offseason.
