minneapolis — A 79-year-old man is in critical condition following a fire in south Minneapolis Friday evening.

Crews arrived at the 2 1/2-story building in the 3500 block of Holmes Avenue South around 10 p.m., the Minneapolis Fire Department says, to find a large fire in the front of the home.

Crews were able to pull a 79-year-old man out of the house. He was taken to the hospital, but is in serious condition.

A second alarm was called and there was minor fire damage to the exterior of neighboring homes, MFD said.

One firefighter suffered an ankle injury from stepping into a hole that was burned into the floor. No one else was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
