The Villas of Beautiful Maples housing project in Hiawatha is returning to its original site west of Bruning Park. The City Commission voted 3-to-2 to return the location, with support from Mayor Becky Shamburg, Commissioners Laura Tollefson and Dave Middendorf, while Brian Shefferd and Tom Martin opposed it. The commission had also been considering another 1.5 acres at 913 South Third Street. Supporters argued that costs are better known at the original site, where the city's costs are estimated at over 800-thousand dollars. City Administrator Brad Scott said the city plans to seek a state revolving loan to cover its share, with repayment coming from economic development sales tax funds.
