The first court hearing in the criminal case against a bar in downtown Stillwater accused of serving liquor to George Musser prior to his death has been postponed until July.
Representatives of Brian’s Bar and Grill, which has been charged with providing liquor to a person under 21 and permitting someone under 21 to consume, had been scheduled to appear in Washington County District Court on Thursday. The first appearance is now set for 1 p.m. July 27.
The attorney representing Brian’s Bar, Dennis Johnson, a partner at Chestnut Cambronne law firm in Minneapolis, requested the continuance “to allow time for further investigation of the matter,” according to a letter he submitted to the court.
Musser, 20, of Stillwater, was seen leaving the bar at 219 S. Main St. around 2:10 a.m. Christmas Eve. His body was found around 7 p.m. on Christmas Day about two miles from the bar, near the 5400 block of Osgood Avenue North in Baytown Township.
According to the criminal complaint, “Brian’s Bar and Grill sold alcoholic beverages to (Musser) without asking for identification. (Musser) consumed a substantial amount of alcohol, resulting in (him) becoming extremely impaired, departing the bar, and walking in extreme temperatures until he collapsed, and ultimately, died.”
Brian’s Bar opened in 2018 in the space that was formerly Brine’s Restaurant and Bar. The After Midnight Group, which runs a number of Twin Cities restaurants and bars including Cowboy Jack’s, partnered with Brian Colombo, Mike Hoolihan and Todd Nelson to purchase the building in 2018. The After Midnight Group also owns Hotel Crosby and Matchstick Restaurant & Spirits in Stillwater.
