St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her says she will keep clearing homeless encampments
St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her is sitting down for her first interview with MPR News since sexual harassment allegations surfaced from St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry, and since the contentious closure of a homeless encampment. She spoke with Minnesota Now host Nina Moini about her strategy for encampments moving forward and her relationship with the police chief. St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her has faced controversy over clearing homeless encampments, following a sexual harassment complaint from St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry. Her directed the closure of an encampment near Pig’s Eye Park in August, which some advocates opposed. Henry sued Her in September, alleging unwanted touching, sexual comments and attempts by Her to develop a personal relationship. An independent investigation cleared Her of sexual harassment but found she acted offensively and inappropriately. The St.Paul City Council recently approved a resolution calling for 60 days of increased engagement before future encampment clearings and for more low-barrier shelter options. Despite this, Her said the city will still proceed with closing Shepard Road, but did not specify a specific date.
